Ibsen texts on the Internet01.10.2001
In terms of copyright Ibsen is not restricted. His works may be freely used by dramatic artists, publishers, arts students and graduates, translators, poetry readers, samplers and others who might have a use for them. As a natural consequence of this there are a large number of Ibsen`s works as electronic text on the Internet - in various formats and different languages.
Below is an overview of texts by Ibsen that are freely available as electronic text at the present moment. We should very much appreciate any tips about Ibsen texts on the Internet that we have not managed to include in our survey (contact us).
The overview has been divided into five categories:
˜*˜ Web editions of Ibsen`s collected worksProject Runeberg in Linköping has published digital facsimiles of what is called the Popular Edition of Ibsen`s collected works. The Popular Edition was published by Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag in Copenhagen in ten volumes 1898-1902. Link to Runeberg`s facsimile edition. In this connection it is natural to mention the ongoing project Henrik Ibsen`s Writings that is in the process of establishing a new historico-critical and commented edition of Ibsen`s writings. The project will be publishing its texts in both book form and electronic format (see separate presentation on ibsen.net). ˜*˜ Individual plays
˜*˜ PoemsIbsen.net has published John Northam`s English translation of Ibsen`s complete production of poems: The Collected Poems of Henrik IbsenProjekt Gutenberg-DE has published Ibsen´s Digte in German translation: Gedichte The most dearly loved of Ibsen`s poems, "Terje Vigen", is available in several Internet editions:
˜*˜ Letters and other manuscriptsCentenary edition of Ibsen`s works: Volume XV-XIXThe Documentation Project at the University of Oslo has digitalised Volumes 15 to 19 of what is called the Centenary Edition of Ibsen`s Works. This includes all his letters, articles, speeches and interviews. The letters have been arranged in chronological order. All the material is in Ibsen`s original Norwegian. Curiosities: - Read the very oldest letter from Ibsen that has been preserved, sent from Grimstad on 20 May 1844 to Poul Lieungh in Skien: link - Have a look at "Norsk Stilebog" [Norwegian composition book] which Ibsen wrote for Examen Artium, the final examination in the Norwegian Grammar School (which he never completed). The first part is entitled "Om Vigtigheden af Selvkundskab" [on the importance of knowledge of oneself] and is dated Grimstad, 3 February 1848: link - Read Ibsen`s brief message to John Paulsen after the latter had published his roman à clef Familien Pehrsen [the Pehrsen family]: link ˜*˜ ConcordanceThe Ibsen ConcordanceThe Computer Centre for the Humanities at the University of Bergen has produced a concordance based on the Centenary Edition of Ibsen`s Works (published by Francis Bull, Halvdan Koht and Didrik Arup Seip from 1928 to 1957). The concordance provides the possibility of electronic searches in 26 of Ibsen`s plays and a collection of poetry, with a total of 630,000 words. The Computer Centre for the Humanities has also produced word lists and various types of statistics relating to Ibsen`s vocabulary. One can find the occurrence of particular words and see how many times and where they appear (useful for example for studies of particular motifs in Ibsen) as well as the percentage distribution of, for example, verbs versus substantives in the different works, and similar things. |
