Theatre museums and archives in Norway

14.11.2001
Two theatre museums and a collection of theatre archives in Norway contain Ibsen material of particular interest: the Bergen Theatre Museum, the Theatre Archives in Bergen and the Theatre Museum in Oslo.

The Bergen Theatre Museum

This museum forms part of the Cultural History Collections at Bergen Museum (University of Bergen). The Ibsen-related material is on show in the "Ibsen in Bergen" exhibition which deals with Ibsen`s six years (1851-1857) as a dramatist and stage director at the Norwegian Theatre in Bergen.

The Theatre Archives in Bergen

The theatre archives in Bergen are part of the Section for Theatre Studies in the Department of Cultural Studies and History of Art at the University of Bergen. These records contain inter alia material from Ibsen`s time as a dramatist and stage director at the Norwegian Theatre in Bergen (1851-1857). On the web pages of the Archives one can see digital facsimiles of the production diary that Ibsen kept during his time at this theatre.

The Theatre Museum in Oslo

The museum`s collection includes a wealth of material about the Christiania Theater (among others of the city`s theatres). The Christiania Theater staged seven of Ibsen`s plays for the very first time and put on most of them during the period that the theatre was in business (1837-1899). From 1862 to 1864 Ibsen was employed at this theatre as an artistic adviser.
